"a train!" shouted the smart youngster, as he realized that he was losing the fight. they both began to giggle and then to laugh out loud. the battle was over before it really started.
you think I'm writing about kids? no, it's about quilts!

they play a big role in the life of our living room. we always wrap them around, even if the sun shines or the fireplace burns. children love to wrap themselves in them and in a second they turn into hot dogs with live stuffing.
the quilted bed cover can also be a train station or yurt, volcano or monster.
but I'm an old bird: when the blanket scares me with crazy sounds and makes me believe it's a ghost, I know how to handle it - grab it and throw it on the mattress that we have instead of the couch.

most often, the blanket becomes a house or a cave. when you sit inside, the pattern of the upper fabric is superimposed on the pattern of the bottom. plus rebuild-and ready an extraordinary, colorful ceiling and walls. children feel protected, my home is my fortress.
all these covers I sewed myself, sometimes from old things, sometimes from fabrics that I could not buy.
it's not fast. first I think up a design, cut the fabric into pieces that are then sewn together again.

the main and longest piece of work - hand stitch. the thread passes through all three layers of fabric (top, bottom and insulation), bonds them together. at the same time it does not wander aimlessly, and goes the route laid by me. thread repeats the contours of the picture, or moving circles, waves, zigzags. sometimes a corner can prick my finger. it is unpleasant, but it is compensated by the feeling of warmth that gives me the blanket spread out on my knees.
|

I love this stage because I can work in the living room, be with children and think at the same time. and it can be difficult for me to stop, because I want to add-to improve here and there. when I finished, remains only on the edges to sew the piping. this stage also requires sewing by hand, the machine does not work as neatly and quietly.
|

then I photograph the cover and let go at will, to plunge into the boiling pot of life. then he'll have to do it without me. but I think it will remember my hands and the time we spent together.
each of my children has a blanket in the dowry. it's strong enough to work as a monster or a cave for their own children, maybe grandchildren.
|

tell us if you had the things from my childhood, do you remember your child's blanket, its pattern or may be how it was feel?
|
